Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests show the substance was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the community for details.
A senior official stated the attack made him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of foreign heritage in 2020.
