The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
